Frequently asked questions
Will I always get five colors?
Similar colors are grouped. A single-color photo or limited remaining colors may produce one to four colors. Missing colors are never invented.
How do I use HEX and CSS?
HEX codes start with # and can be used in design tools. Copy CSS creates color variables you can paste into a webpage.
Why do colors vary between photos?
Lighting, shadows and compression affect the result. The photo is resized to choose representative colors, rather than list every original pixel exactly.
Should white be excluded?
Example: for a coffee photo on a white table, exclude white to focus on the cup and coffee. Turn the option off when the bright background is part of the mood. A fully white image correctly produces no remaining colors when exclusion is on; turn it off to obtain #FFFFFF.
The image is reduced, then similar pixels are grouped to select up to five representative colors. Small details may be missed; lighting and shadows affect the result. This is not a measurement of exact paint or print colors.
Check readability as well as appearance
Use the text and background selectors in the color-combination preview below. As a calculated example, #252B29 text on #FFFFFF gives 14.42:1. Identical foreground and background colors give 1.00:1 and hide the text.
The 4.5:1 indication checks the contrast of normal text colors only. It is not a full accessibility certification for text on images, transparency, small fonts or keyboard access. Check your actual font size and screen too.
Understand each output
Clicking a color copies its HEX value beginning with #. Copy CSS creates variables such as --color-1 for the extracted palette. It does not automatically export the text/background choices from the contrast preview.
The palette PNG is 1200 × 1440px and includes both the selected photo and its colors. Copy HEX or CSS to send only color codes. If the photo is private, check what the PNG contains before sharing it.
When a photo or palette is unavailable
Use one photo no larger than 20MB and 50 million pixels. JPG, PNG and WebP are recommended. HEIC and AVIF depend on browser decoding support; convert to JPG if needed. For a transparent or nearly white image, turn white exclusion off or choose an image with visible colors.
Photos are processed on your device and not uploaded. Reloading clears the selected photo and palette, so save the output first. Report a problem with your browser and file format if a problem repeats.
Keep colors and put them to work
Lock colors before choosing another photo. Locked colors are retained, but their positions may shift. Assign background, body text, button background and button text, then inspect card, poster, slide and web examples. Both text combinations are checked against 4.5:1; this is not a complete accessibility certification. Role CSS exports the assigned colors.
Uncheck Include the photo to export a 1200×800 color-only card. The existing photo-inclusive PNG remains 1200×1440. Explicitly saved palettes contain only color codes, roles, locks and the name you enter, up to 12 in this browser. Photos and original filenames are never included. Remove supports Undo. Reload clears the photo; saved colors can be restored separately.
